In 448 AD, Greek writer and historian Priscus journeyed from Constantinople to meet with Attila the Hun. Pricus wrote down the events of his journey, leaving one of the few first-hand accounts of a diplomatic meeting with the Huns. His writings can tell us much about how the Huns interacted with other cultures and societies and how Attila—specifically—welcomed his guests to his court. Europe, in the 5th century, was undergoing many societal changes. Many of these changes were associated with the introduction of new barbarian tribes—barbarian is derived from the Greek word babblers meaning anyone who did not speak Greek. During the decline of the Roman Empire, many barbaric tribes took the opportunity to attack. The migration of barbarians closer to Rome put stress on an already stressed Roman government. The increased tension eventually lead to an outbreak of wars. In 410 Rome was sacked by the Visigoths—lead by Alaric—and was attacked again in 455 but the Vandals (â€Å"Dining With Attila the Hun, 448†). Attacks on the Roman Empire by the Huns did not start until the middle of the 5th century. The Huns crossed the Danube in 441, upon crossing they sacked the city of Margus (Late Roman Timeline†). The characters in the poem, Women, and The Odyssey are both epic heroes. Odysseus is a strong and brave man, but I think he lacks one of the major characteristics of a hero. I think he thinks of himself more than of others. I think the characters in the poem, Women, are better heroes because they can be related to easier. I dont think the poem characters are like an epic hero because they are less into them selves than an epic hero. They also seem to have done lesser things, I mean epic heroes always do something so great, like take twenty men on, or lead an army to victory. For example, at the time of negotiation, Seller made the first call of 3,85,000$. However, the Buyer already knew that seller bought this property two months before. So, buyer asked seller why he wanted to sell the home, seller totally ignored the question and started telling the features of the home. Buyer again asked the same question and I noticed that seller got nervous, maybe he did not know what to say, whatever finally, seller told that he has another house and he was selling this home because his wife thought that this property is too big. I experienced some miscommunication at that moment maybe seller was not prepared. After that buyer made the first call of 3,55,000 and mentioned everything about taxes he had to pay and other expenses and explained that he cannot pay that much. So seller lowered the price to 3,80,000. After some arguments buyer offered to pay 3,70,000 only if seller will give him 3 months to sell his old house. I think it was a trick of buyer, whatever after that seller agreed upon 3,77,000 only if buyer will sign the document of lease and all paper work and suddenly seller’s colleague wanted to talk with him so they went to talk on side and came back and said the cannot give the house for 3,77,000 so they again increased the price to 3,80,000. This was very strange and difficult, because once they offered 3,77,000 and after sometime again increased the price, there was obvious confusion and frustration on their part, which did make discussion difficult. Buyer said to seller that he wanted to seal this deal as soon as possible and it would also be good for seller as well because as soon as seller would sell this property he could save money for mortgage and other property taxes for next month. After that buyer mentioned about location of house that it was near the river and there can be mosquitos and insects in summer and it will be difficult to rent the house. Dahl begins with the basics, asking why we should uphold the Constitution, and stating that his aim ‘is not to propose changes in the American Constitution but to suggest changes in the way we think about our constitution’ (p.1). His book starts on the right note by immediately admitting the imperfection of American constitutional arrangements – at the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia, Rhode Island sent no delegates, while those from New Hampshire arrived weeks late. Not only was this an irregular start, but Dahl rightly asks why Americans should still feel bound to a document signed by only 39 men, some of whom owned slaves. When Dahl notes that there had never since been a r eferendum on it, one wonders if perhaps there should have been. Dahl is not unduly harsh to the Framers of the Constitution, recognizing that they were a product of their times, and that ‘Judged from later, more democratic perspectives’, the document has many shortcomings (p. 15). However, given this fact, Dahl is right that Americans should look upon it as the work of mortal men, and a practical and changing document, rather than a sacred text to be preserved. For example, with slavery, it was clear that the delegates from the southern states would never accept anything which didn’t allow slavery to continue, and so it was allowed for the sake of a strong federal government. Again, with the unequal representation in the Senate – a point which arises repeatedly in Dahl’s work as a weak point of the Constitution – the smaller states would never have accepted anything less than equal representation with the larger states. There is a tendency to assume that, because the Constitution retains the support of most Americans, and because of the idealistic portrayal of its origins, its status as a basically good document need not be questioned. What is most striking about Dahl’s work is his comparison of the American Constitution with that of other countries with a strong democratic tradition, out of which comes one major point – if the American Constitution was such a wonderful document, surely it would have been adapted by other countries seeking a democratic model. As Dahl himself writes, ‘Many Americans appear to believe that our constitution has been a model for the rest of the democratic world’, but of the 22 other democracies analyzed, America is unique (p.41). Some countries share some aspects of the US constitution, such as its federalism, or its strong judicial review mechanisms, but none has several key features in common. Especially interesting in this regard is the American presidential sy stem, which allows for a uniquely powerful head of state, who, since the office is now filled by popular election, is like ‘a monarch and prime minister rolled into one’ (p.72). We must agree with the author that such a powerful position does not really seem appropriate in a modern democracy. However, this is not the worst of the defects of the constitution as it now stands.
